JFP STUDIOS / EDITORIAL CASE STUDY

Black Data Guy Had the STEM Education Program. The Missing Piece Was the Story.

A messaging transformation for a hands-on mathematics program: JFP Studios shifted the story from classroom activities to educational value that school principals and superintendents could recognize.

01 / THE BUSINESS CONTEXT

The context behind the transformation.

Black Data Guy, led by Kwesi McDavid, delivered hands-on mathematics activities through Queens Community College's STEP Summer Program.

The audience for this story included education decision-makers who needed to understand both the activity and its purpose.

From describing classroom activities to demonstrating why the learning matters.

02 / THE CHALLENGE

The activities were engaging. Their educational value needed a clearer story.

The underlying business objective shaped what JFP Studios recommended and built.

THE CHALLENGE IN BRIEF

  • The original story focused on hands-on classroom activities rather than instructional value.
  • School leaders needed a clear case for engagement, applied mathematics, collaboration and problem-solving.
  • The assignment was to improve interpretation, not invent outcomes or claim program adoption.

The classroom activities were engaging, but their descriptions emphasized what students did more than why it mattered.

  • Visible activity: students built cars, tested ramps and collected data.
  • Less visible learning value: the descriptions needed to show applied mathematics, experimentation and collaboration.
  • Credibility constraint: JFP could clarify the educational relevance without inventing measured learning outcomes.

03 / THE CREATIVE RESPONSE

Change the lens, not the classroom evidence.

We reworked the message around educational value while preserving the underlying classroom evidence. The before-and-after examples show the change directly.

WHAT WE DID / THREE DECISIONS

  • Translate observable classroom activities into educational benefits.
  • Use five before-and-after messaging examples so readers can compare the change themselves.
  • Preserve the original evidence and avoid unverified claims about revenue, enrollment or impact.

Change the lens, not the facts

JFP Studios reviewed the existing narrative for the QCC STEP hands-on mathematics and engineering program. The objective was to translate classroom observations into educational value that school principals, superintendents and curriculum decision-makers could recognize.

Before and after: five messaging shifts

Read each pair in order. The “before” describes the activity-centered message; the “after” shows the educational value the same evidence communicates. Except for the first quoted phrase, these are editorial summaries rather than verbatim final-copy excerpts.

01 / From fun to purposeful engagement

BEFORE, Activity-led:

“Experience the Joy Fun, Fun and More Fun.”

AFTER, Educational-value-led:

Students engage with mathematics through creativity and hands-on exploration.

02 / From a popular module to perceived program value

BEFORE, Activity-led:

Students enjoyed the module, and QCC STEP planned to reuse it.

AFTER, Educational-value-led:

The planned reuse signals perceived value in a hands-on educational experience.

03 / From helping classmates to peer learning

BEFORE, Activity-led:

Older students helped younger students complete the activities.

AFTER, Educational-value-led:

Peer-to-peer collaboration supports shared understanding and student participation.

04 / From fixing broken cars to engineering thinking

BEFORE, Activity-led:

Students rebuilt their cars when something malfunctioned.

AFTER, Educational-value-led:

Students practiced iterative problem-solving: test, troubleshoot, adjust and try again.

05 / From measurements to applied mathematics

BEFORE, Activity-led:

Students measured speed, incline and gravity using ramps and model cars.

AFTER, Educational-value-led:

Experimentation made abstract mathematical concepts tangible and observable.

These comparisons describe documented messaging shifts. They do not establish verified increases in program adoption, enrollment or revenue.

05 / THE RESULTS

An educational program explained in the language of learning outcomes.

05

Before-and-after messaging shifts

Five activity-centered descriptions reframed around learning value; not program-adoption results.

What changed in the message

  • Before: describe the hands-on activity students complete.
  • After: explain what the activity helps students practice, including applied mathematics, problem-solving and collaboration.
  • The revised message gives school decision-makers a more specific reason to consider the curriculum.

The business implication

Buyers need to understand the value of the experience, not just what happens during it. Translating classroom activities into learning benefits makes the program easier to evaluate without inventing educational outcomes.

This is a messaging transformation, not evidence of higher enrollment, adoption or revenue.

This case documents clearer messaging, not confirmed increases in program adoption, enrollment or revenue.
