The Challenge

Backyard Sports needed to update its visual presence across its digital platforms. As a nonprofit serving children of all abilities—including a standout special needs program—their goal was to communicate impact, connection, and inclusion through fresh, intentional photography. The ask wasn’t just about better pictures. It was about capturing the heartbeat of their mission in a way that would support website design, donor outreach, volunteer recruitment, and marketing.

The Solution

JFP Studios approached the project by designing a complete visual strategy that merged empathy with execution. Starting with a detailed planning session, we built a custom folder system and shot list aligned to multiple usage scenarios: web banners, print newsletters, fundraising materials, and social media.

We took the time to understand the rhythm of the day: documenting the unique energy of the special needs program in the morning, followed by the high-action, competitive atmosphere of the basketball clinic in the afternoon.

What made this project unique was the sensitivity required during the special needs session. We ensured volunteer-athlete interactions were the focus, and followed a color-coded name tag system to respect photo permissions.

In parallel, we strategically curated portrait moments and horizontal vs. vertical shots to suit varying media formats.
